- I chose to study travel & tourism because:
- I wanted a career that would allow me to interact with people every day. I started in retail and tourism seemed like a natural progression. I feel very lucky to have picked a career path that has brought me an immense amount of joy. It is never a dull moment in the tourism industry!
- My greatest strength:
- Enthusiasm. I will always try to bring a positive and energetic attitude to the workplace.
- My dream job:
- Opening eco-resorts around the world. I love the thrill of starting something new and connecting that with my passion for environmental stewardship.
- The most exciting trend in travel right now:
- People wanting to connect with the natural world around them. People are looking to unplug from their zoom meetings and find some peace and quiet.
- In 10 years I see myself:
- Working somewhere remote and picturesque. I enjoy living in small communities that value the natural space around them.
- Most memorable travel experience:
- During a trip to Hawaii, I joined a shark snorkeling tour with a research and conservation focus. It was an awe-inspiring experience that allowed me to see these magnificent creatures safely and without a cage or bait. Nothing can compare to swimming alongside these misunderstood animals.
- First place I will visit post-pandemic:
- Europe or New Zealand. In the spring of 2020, I had plans to travel throughout Europe during my semester abroad. However, COVID-19 put a pause on those plans and I want to see my original plans through. Although, I have always dreamed of working and living in New Zealand.
- On my bucket list:
- Staying in an overwater bungalow in the ocean. Being able to wake up and jump in the water for a quick snorkel would be my dream!
- My greatest achievement:
- Participating in the Student Work Experience Program (SWEP) through Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. After spending two summers at the Fairmont Banff Springs, I gained an immense amount of experience. Being a part of SWEP strengthened my love of working in the tourism industry.
- Best travel advice I’ve received:
- Always carry some cash. Having currency for each country I was visiting was extremely helpful for tipping and transit.
- One positive and lasting outcome the pandemic will have on the travel industry:
- As much as the pandemic has created some great divides it has also brought us closer together in some ways. I have seen so many people exploring their neighbourhoods and local destinations. The pandemic has made us appreciate that beauty in our backyards.
