This month the BSAP team caught up with Emma Madro, 2022 Baxter Student Ambassador and graduate of the travel and tourism program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
In her profile in the April 2022 special BSAP issue of Travel Courier, Emma said that in the future she sees herself “in a job that makes me and my clients happy” and that “the need to travel and connect with people has become very prominent after experiencing a pandemic.”
Read on to see how Emma now brings people together as a meetings and events manager and embodies the spirit of hospitality for her clients.

What is your current job? Please describe your job duties and what you enjoy about the role.
I am currently a meetings and events manager at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, where I curate a wide range of events, from large-scale conferences and corporate gatherings to intimate weddings and everything in between. I enjoy getting to meet a variety of people from every industry across the board. I am constantly learning about diverse sectors and walks of life.

What has been your career path so far?
After university, I took a job as a hotel concierge to gain experience in the tourism industry. This helped me move up to an event coordinator role and eventually to manager, where I am now!
How did your post-secondary studies and BSAP experience prepare you for working in tourism and hospitality?
My studies at SAIT and experience with BSAP laid a solid foundation for my success, providing me with the skills and confidence to thrive as a professional in the hospitality industry. The knowledge I gained continues to play a huge role in my work every day.
Are there career opportunities you are looking forward to for the future?
I’m excited about the future and the many opportunities within the events and hospitality industry. With so many different roles and paths to explore, I’m looking forward to growing in my career and taking on new challenges that will help me develop professionally. You don’t always know where this industry will take you, and that’s what I find so interesting about it!
Well done, Emma, and we look forward to seeing where you take your career next!
