BSAP caught up with 2023 Baxter Student Ambassador from Georgian College, Katrina Kroeger, to learn where her career has taken her and what a typical day on the job is like.

What is your current job and what is a typical day like?

My current position is the Visit Caledon Administrator for social media and website at the Town of Caledon. My job duties include creating Instagram reels, writing blog posts, making event listings, creating the content calendar and coordinating influencer campaigns. On a typical day you could find me anywhere from hiking, to visiting breweries or farms and many more places so that I can film videos for Instagram. If I’m not out filming, I am editing. My favourite part about my job is going to these local businesses to connect with the owners and learn how I can help promote them to tourists.

Please share your career path so far and what experiences led you to your current role.

My career path started with my co-op when I was in school at Georgian College. I worked at South Georgian Bay Tourism, where I went on to take a full-time job after school as their Digital Marketing Coordinator. After working for SGB, I moved on to the Town of Caledon. Outside of school, learning different social medias on my own was very valuable as that’s a big part of our world today with destination marketing.

How did your post-secondary studies and BSAP experience prepare you for working in tourism & hospitality?

Aside from learning and gaining confidence, I really think that making connections prepared me for the tourism world after my studies. Now that I am working in the industry, I have learned how we are all connected in some way or another and that definitely started in school. I now work with people who were guest speakers in my classes, and they all gave solid advice on what the industry is really like. It’s nice to graduate and now have connections with those people.

What career opportunities are you looking forward to in the future?

Currently, I’m very happy in my role but I am open to opportunities as I continue to grow in this industry. I think after working creatively with web and social media, I am also interested in the research side of marketing—learning who is travelling where and for what reason, all that fun stuff.
