This month we caught up with Genelle Seridon, the winning Baxter Student Ambassador from Humber College in 2022.
An internship at WestJet has led Genelle to an exciting career in customer service with plenty of travel opportunities. She describes her experience below:
What is your current job and at which company? What do you enjoy about your job?
I am currently a customer service agent at WestJet Airlines. My job is to work with my team in assisting guests to prepare for their flights. I am responsible for accommodating guests at check-in, booking new flights, as well as performing deplaning and boarding processes each day. I enjoy meeting new people everyday at work, whether they are my colleagues or guests. Interacting with those who share the love of travel is the highlight of my job. I also value the opportunity that my work has given me to travel to destinations throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia!

What has been your career path so far? What experiences led you to your current role?
In order to get to where I am today, I completed two years in the Tourism – Travel Services Management program at Humber College. During my studies, I was given the opportunity to take my internship at the airport with WestJet. The internship as well as previous customer service experience eventually led to my present role that I have maintained for almost three years now.

How did your post-secondary studies and BSAP experience prepare you for working in tourism & hospitality?
My experiences helped introduce and expand my knowledge about different sectors within the travel industry such as tourism, hospitality and aviation. Not only did I increase my knowledge, but I developed professional skills as I was provided with hands-on experiences through assignments and internships. I also had the privilege of meeting professionals with years of experience in the industry, providing me with helpful advice and tips as a newcomer joining the travel industry.
Are there career opportunities you are looking forward to in the future?
At the moment there is not a specific profession I have in mind, but I am eager for possible opportunities where I can grow professionally and develop new skills while being able to explore new places and travel!
