Italian cruise line Costa Cruises took the opportunity of World Ocean Day on June 8 to launch its new environmental education project, Guardians of the Sea.

Guardians of the Sea will offer young guests ages 6-17 aboard Costa ships engaging on-board programming and workshops that highlight environmental awareness. The programs will integrate into the ships’ pre-existing youth programming and will build on the successful Guardians of the Coast program which has reached over 100,000 Italian students and teachers.

“By playing while we learn, they will have the opportunity to discover some of the species that live in the sea, their unique characteristics and their ecological value within the marine ecosystem. This new knowledge will foster the construction of an empathic relationship with nature, and in particular with the sea, which is essential to encourage respect and protection of biodiversity and promote the pro-environmental choices of tomorrow’s citizens,” said Angela Mencarelli, CEO of La Fabbrica, which helped develop the programming.

Guardians of the Sea will increase Costa Cruises’ capacity for environmental education by reaching international guests on board with a spirit of inclusivity and interactivity.
